Payment Amounts
How Much Is SSDI Per Month in 2026?
The average disabled worker receives about $1,630 a month. The maximum is $4,152. Where you land depends on your lifetime earnings — not your diagnosis.
The Short Answer
In 2026, most SSDI recipients are paid between $900 and $2,200 per month. The national average is approximately $1,630 and the statutory maximum is $4,152. SSDI replaces a portion of the income you used to earn, so the more you paid into Social Security over your career, the larger your check.
Two things that do not affect the amount: how severe your condition is, and how much money you have in the bank. Severity determines whether you qualify. Earnings determine how much you are paid.
Typical Monthly SSDI by Career Earnings
| Average annual salary | Estimated SSDI | Why |
|---|---|---|
| $25,000 | ~$1,120 / month | Lower lifetime earnings replace a high share of income — about 54%. |
| $45,000 | ~$1,570 / month | Close to the national average SSDI benefit. |
| $70,000 | ~$2,020 / month | The second bend point starts reducing the replacement rate. |
| $100,000 | ~$2,510 / month | Earnings above the taxable maximum add nothing to your PIA. |
| $150,000+ | up to $4,152 / month | The 2026 maximum, reachable only with decades at the taxable maximum. |
Illustrative estimates based on the SSA's 2026 PIA formula for a full career of steady earnings. Your official figure comes from your SSA earnings record.
How the Formula Works
The SSA converts your career earnings into an average indexed monthly earnings figure (AIME), then runs it through the 2026 primary insurance amount formula:
90% of the first $1,286 of AIME + 32% of AIME from $1,286 to $7,749 + 15% of AIME above $7,749 = your monthly SSDI benefit (PIA)
Those thresholds are the bend points. They are the reason a worker who averaged $30,000 a year keeps a much higher share of their income than one who averaged $120,000 — the program is designed to protect lower earners most.
What Can Reduce Your Check
- Medicare Part B premiums are deducted once your 24-month Medicare waiting period ends.
- Workers' compensation or public disability offsets can cap combined benefits at 80% of your prior average current earnings.
- The family maximum limits the total paid on your record when dependents also receive auxiliary benefits.
- Federal income tax may apply if your household income exceeds the IRS base amounts, though most SSDI-only households owe nothing.
