About SSDI Estimator

A free, independent calculator that helps people understand their potential Social Security Disability Insurance benefits — before they make any decisions about filing.

SSDI Estimator is a free tool that helps people understand what Social Security Disability Insurance might pay them — before they make any decisions about filing.

We built this because the system is confusing, the stakes are high, and people deserve straight answers.

The average SSDI benefit in 2026 is $1,630 per month. The maximum is $4,152 per month. Most people have no idea where their number falls. Our calculator uses the same formula SSA uses — with the official 2026 bend points — to give you an honest estimate based on your real earnings history.

How We Calculate Your Benefit

The Social Security Administration uses a formula called the Primary Insurance Amount (PIA). We use the same formula.

Here is the exact math:

PIA = 0.90 × min(AIME, 1286) + 0.32 × max(0, min(AIME, 7749) − 1286) + 0.15 × max(0, AIME − 7749)

AIME is your Average Indexed Monthly Earnings — your top 35 earning years, adjusted for inflation and averaged by month. The formula uses two bend points: $1,286 and $7,749 in 2026.

Our calculators also account for the mandatory 5-month waiting period and standard attorney fee structures, so your back pay estimate reflects what you would actually receive.

To keep our numbers accurate, our calculation logic is regularly audited against the latest SSA Program Operations Manual System (POMS) updates.

Who Should Use This Tool

Anyone who thinks they might qualify for SSDI and wants to understand what their monthly benefit might look like. Anyone who has been denied and needs to understand back pay. Anyone comparing SSDI to SSI and trying to figure out which program applies to them.

A Note on Accuracy

Our calculator provides estimates. Your actual benefit will be calculated by SSA based on your official earnings record on file with the agency. Our estimate may differ from SSA's calculation if your earnings record has missing years, errors, self-employment income, or adjustments like the Windfall Elimination Provision.

For your official number, request a copy of your Social Security Statement at my.ssa.gov.
